Aligning Production to Markets
(AP2M) Program
Transforming Malawi's agricultural sector through targeted market alignment and export growth
In this case study:
// Executive Summary
The Grain Traders and Processors Association (GTPA) launched the Aligning Production to Markets (AP2M) Program to boost the production, quality, and export of key crops, including soybeans, sugar beans, groundnuts, and kilombero rice. The project aimed to meet growing demands in the South African, U.S., and regional markets. With a focus on post-harvest loss reduction and phytosanitary control, the program has already impacted numerous smallholder farmers, created jobs, and increased exports significantly.
// Outcomes Achieved
Boosted exports from $2 million to $10 million annually.
Created and maintained 2,197 rural jobs (62% held by women).
Impacted 3,644 smallholder farmers across 29 communities in 15 districts of Malawi.
Linked five export-ready enterprises with USAID TradeHub for enhanced export capacity.
Organized virtual B2B meetings between GTPA members and South African buyers, facilitating key trade deals.
// Opportunities for Further Collaboration
Expand the AP2M Program to additional regions in Malawi and explore further export markets.
Strengthen collaboration with South African and U.S. buyers through more frequent virtual and physical trade events.
Continue scaling technology adoption for improving productivity and post-harvest processing to ensure sustained export growth.
